A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The summer has passed and fall is upon us.  That can only mean one thing, “Its dance time again”.

In the past few months we have seen scorching hot days, the passing of our friend Mrs. Adeline Duncan, and BCHDA’S casino funds pulled out from under our feet and then returned (Phew).  This year the executive will be trying to tighten our budget in anticipation of all casino funding ending in the near future.  This can only mean one thing, higher fees, more fundraising and more participation from you the members.  But enough of the doom and gloom.  Your executive is here for your dancer.  We have and always will try our hardest to provide the best venues, judges, and pipers to make every dancer’s experience a happy and fun one!  We are already working hard to produce this year’s performance of the Celtic Celebration.  Look for it next April 9th 2010

In closing I would like to thank all the members who volunteered last season (we couldn’t do it without you) and last years executive for all their many hours of dedication.  I would like to welcome all our new members to the association and say thanks to our returning members for your support.  Good luck to all our dancers and I hope you all have a fun year with us as a BC Highland Dancer!

Dave Moralek

President

A note from the Technical Committee

It has been brought to the attention of the Technical Committee that the dances for the Beginners are the same for each competition during the 2009-2010 season.   It was felt that perhaps a little more variety for these dancers would be welcome.  As several entry forms have all ready been submitted, and money paid, instead of changing the existing dances one dance will be added to the BEGINNER SECTION for the months of January and April only (November will remain as listed).   There will be no charge for these added dances.  The following dances will be added: January: Flora April: Seann Truibhas.   We hope that all Beginner dancers will welcome this addition.   Previously registered dancers will be contacted prior to each competition to confirm the dances they wish to do.

COSTUME SALE

There will be a sales rack at the Nov. 21st competition.  So bring all your used costumes.  Don’t forget this is a fund raiser for your association so keep in mind that 10% will be deducted from your selling price.  Please tag all pieces with you name, phone number and asking price.

Celtic Celebration

A big ‘Thank You’ to Heather Jolly who has volunteered to head the committee for this year’s performance which will showcase our own BC Highland Dancers and a variety of toe tapping Celtic entertainment.  She hopes to have much support form teachers, parents and dancers and will be contacting teachers soon.  We would like to sell out the theater this year; with so much talent out there we shouldn’t have a problem.  So start thinking about your choreography dance now! You only have 4 and half months to perfect it!  Mark this date on your calendar Friday April 9th 2010.  This is a major fundraiser for BCHDA and may be our only funding if we lose our casino funds.  Don’t miss it!

KILT MAKING COURSE UPDATE

The fall class has gone very well with five students completing there kilts as well as being shown how to construct a vest or Jacket.  If there is some interest I will run another 7 week session from May 4-June 15 2010.  For more details: Please contact:

Gail Russell at 604 943-3977 or email gaillrussell@hotmail.com.

Silent Auction Baskets

A big 'Thank You' to Heather Richendrfer and her dancers for offering to coordinate the 'Silent Auction Baskets' fundraiser at our March Open Championship/Competition.  This has always been a popular fundraising event.  We depend on volunteer groups like this for their support of our association.

BC Representative to Provincial Championships

If you are one of the fortunate few BCHDA dancers to become a BC Representative to the Provincial Championship you will be awarded a bursary on behalf of your association to help with expenses at the Canadian championships.

NEW THIS YEAR

This year we will be issuing membership cards which will be distributed at the first competition in November.  We would like to thank Lee Gieschen of Royal Printers for printing and donating the card.  Always bring your card to the competitions as you may find perks attached to the card.

Note to teachers: BCHDA would like to extend a welcome to all dance teachers to become card holding members of our association.  Your membership will entitle you to free admission to our 3 Closed Competitions as well as your name and e-mail address being posted on our website.  Also, at a minimal fee, you have the opportunity to add your professional link to our website.  Membership forms will be available at the door at our first competition . . . thank you for your continued support of BC Highland.
